National Registry of Historic Places
In June, 2020, the Cemetery Board applied to be on the National Registry of Historic Places. This submission was made to the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources whereby it will be reviewed by the NC National Register Advisory Committee. Once the application is approved, the nomination is sent to the National Park Service where the authority resides to list the cemetery on the National Registry.
Southport cemetery makes it on to National register of Historic Places
Damage to the cemetery by Hurricane Isaias in 2020 was estimated to be $3,715.00. The hurricane took out several large trees, one of which severely damaged a portion of the fencing.
